To get anywhere, Chinaski knows that he’ll have to suck up to people he considers to be his inferiors, people who are presumably lying to themselves when they refuse to empathize with Chinaski. Chinaski’s arrogant, and perpetually self-destructive, but he’s also not wrong. Kym, the main sober house character played by Anne Hathaway, is incredibly annoying and hard to deal with, but also undeniably loveable at the same time. There is so much shame and guilt that goes along with life in addiction. This film does an amazing job of showing how that plays out in a family dynamic.

While the movie is ostensibly about the crime and the impact witnessing it has upon the main character, her alcoholism plays a prominent role throughout the entire movie. Just as it does in real life, alcoholism affects her life on every level. Without giving too much away, we see how the consequences of her alcohol addiction bring drama, stress and tragedy into her life and complicate what was already sure to be a complex situation. This isn’t so much a redemption story as a cautionary tale, but it’s still a good watch and worth seeing.
